The Norwich Cadets encamped at what is now the Prouty Beach and Campground during the first half of the 20th century.
By Scott Wheeler Civil War re-enactors encamped out at the Prouty Beach and Campground in Newport in late July during the Aquafest festivities. They took festival-goers back to the days of the Civil War. This isn’t the first time that men in uniform have encamped at the Newport site. Back during the first half of the 20th century the Norwich cadets camped out there, not to fascinate and educate visitors, but to prepare for war. Military tents dotted the plateau overlooking Lake Memphremagog for a number of summers. In addition to these two groups of men a portion of the site was used for temporary military housing for servicemen returning home from World War II.
