A Salute to the Veterans of World War II

They came from mountainside farms, villages, and larger communities from the Vermont/Massachusetts border to the Vermont/Quebec border and all locations in-between, the Vermonters who served in World War II. Among those Vermonters was Lyndol Palin of Newport (front right, second from left). He served as a B-17 pilot during the war.

The World War II generation has been called America’s Greatest Generation. However, as time marches on this generation is falling victim to the passage of time. The men and women who served in the war are no exception.
Scott and Penny Wheeler and their family of Derby, along with the Elks Lodge in Derby, will host a Salute to the Veterans of World War II on Saturday, June 14 at the Elks Lodge on the Derby Road in Derby. The event, which will begin at 1 p.m., will serve as a time to recognize Vermonters who served in the war and those who worked on the home front for the war effort. This event will be free and open to the public.
Last year the Wheelers hosted the Korean/Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Day. They were joined in this effort by the Elks and VFW Post 798 in Newport. Also in recent years the Wheelers joined others to help raise money to send veterans of World War II to the then-recently unveiled monument to that war in Washington, D.C. The family is also the owner of Vermont’s Northland Journal.
As with last year’s event, the salute to the veterans who served in WWII will not only serve as a time to honor them, but it will also provide the veterans with the opportunity to share with us their stories and mementos of this horrible war.
People with questions, ideas, or who are interested in taking part in this event can contact Scott Wheeler at (802) 334-5920 or by e-mail at northlandjournal@gmail.com.
