Opening Day of Fishing 2008 - the Fish Weren't Biting but the Fishermen were Eating
The Willoughby River in Orleans is a popular fishing destination on the opening day of trout season. However, high, muddy water kept many fishermen away from the river on Saturday, the opening day of the season.
The Royer family, who has fished the river for decades, didn't let water conditions stop them from fishing. They had a large umbrella to get out of the rain and a fire to warm them.
While fishermen had little luck at catching something to eat on the banks of the river, there was plenty for them to eat at the American Legion Hall at the annual fishermen's breakfast. The breakfast was hosted by the Orleans Rod and Gun Club.
One of the special guests at the breakfast was Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Wayne Laroche. Standing in back of Laroche is club president Brian Haley.
